GameTimeLinux
GtLinuxInstaller.sh --wizard

The installer wizard

Boot the install media and run the wizard. It asks every question first, then runs every check and shows the plan. Nothing is written to any disk until you type the disk's path back.

See it run

A replay of the wizard's own questions installing GameTimeEdition onto an example machine. Nothing runs in your browser except the typing.

root@gtlinux-ge-install: ~

The questions, in order

  1. What to install — GameTimeLinux alone, or an edition the media carries
  2. The release files: rootfs, kernel package, packages
  3. Packages to lay over the rootfs, and configurations to make live
  4. The disk to install onto
  5. The keyboard map
  6. The language
  7. The machine's name and time zone
  8. The network: DHCP, static, both, or none
  9. Root's password and the accounts

Built to be safe

  • The disk holding the running system, disks under 8 GiB, read-only and busy disks are never offered.
  • Passwords are typed twice and never echoed.
  • A dry run checks everything and writes nothing.
  • The keyboard map can be loaded on the console first, so the password you type is the one the new system reads.
  • Every package of the GameEdition set is verified as it installs.

The same install as a command

The wizard prints its answers as the flags that give the same install, so a second machine can be done without questions:

GtLinuxInstaller.sh --disk /dev/nvme0n1 \
    --rootfs /opt/vm/rootfs/gtlinux-0.7.7-weakclaude-baseman-darknight.tar.xz \
    --kernel-pkg /opt/vm/gameedition/kernel/linux-darknight-gec-7.2.11.tar.xz \
    --edition /opt/vm/gameedition --hostname gamebox01 \
    --root-password-file /root/pw --dhcp --timezone America/Chicago

Add --dry-run to check without writing. The disk gets GPT with an EFI system partition and an ext4 root; GRUB is installed for x86_64 UEFI. A graphical installer, Merlin, is on the roadmap, with this wizard as its fallback.
